Sight Word Rings
As much as possible, I would like students to continue practicing their sight words as this is an important strategy to help with their reading as well as writing. I am attaching the copies of the sight word lists for each grade level. Set A is Grade 1 and Set B is Grade 2. I have each student's checklist at home so if they don't remember where they left off when school ended, please just message me and I will let you know.
Some of the Grade 2 students are currently working on Spelling the Grade 1 sight words as this enables them to write more independently without having to rely on word walls for those frequently used words. I was not too concerned about Set B as of yet as I know they will be able to read them fairly easily and was expecting all of them to fly through that component once they mastered the spelling of the first set of words.
Also, my expectation is not that every student in their grade level would master both the reading and spelling of all of the words in their list. So, for example, I was not looking for Grade 1 to have mastered the reading AND spelling of ALL the words in Set A by the end of June. Each child was and should continue to work at their own pace but a good guideline would be that the student can at least read most or all of the words in their list.

ReadingFirst, your child must be able to read their words. I start them with a ring on which they know all but one or two words. Once they master all of the words (can correctly identify each word 3 times cumulatively), they will move on to the next ring. If they already know all of the words on that ring, then we would move onto the next.

SpellingOnce all words are mastered by sight, your child will then need to practice the spelling of these words. For example, they MUST master the reading of ALL the Grade 1 (Set A) words before they begin to work on the spelling. When ready, we begin the process again with the Grade 2 (Set B) words.

Materials for Practice We use a variety of fun materials to practice our sight words in the classroom. You can see examples on the Word Work page.
Many of these tools can be found at a Dollar Store and purchased for home use if you wish to keep your child engaged in their sight word learning. I also encourage you to help your child find creative ways to practice their words at home! |
