Recount Writing and Journals
One of the ways you can encourage your child to write at home is to keep a journal. This is a very strange time in all of our lives and one that the kids are sure to remember. A journal kept during this experience can later become a keepsake that they can look back on when they reminisce with friends and family about this time in their lives. They can write and draw about what they are thinking and feeling about the whole experience and having to stay isolated from friends and extended family. They can write about how life has changed for them in the last several weeks especially how school and learning has changed or they can write a Recount to share what they are doing with their families to pass the time. Lots of families are doing some creative things and finding ways to make the best of it!
They can use whatever they have around the house such as a notebook, or any kind of paper that they can put in a duo tang (eventually). They can even create their own journal with cardboard or construction paper covers. Let them do some problem solving and figure out what they can use and they can be as creative as they want!

Grade 1 Recount
This is chart outlines the sentences we include when writing a Recount.
|
I have colour coded the sentences to match the chart so students can see how each sentence fits together to complete the story.
|
I have also shown how I sometimes mark the lines with an "X" and highlight the lines and margin so students can see how to anchor their printing to the red margin and know where to continue to the next line. Some students struggle with spatial awareness when printing especially on loose leaf paper as they are not used to it.

Grade 2 Recount
This chart outlines what Grade 2 students should include when writing a Recount. They also provide four main events (First, Then, Next, Finally) but they also need to include a supporting sentence that tells some extra details about each event.
|
Once again, I have colour-coded the sentences so students can see how each sentence fits together to complete my story.
I do this in the classroom so students can visually separate each step of the process and so they can help me ensure I include each detail. |
