Reading Practice with RAZ Kids
As part of the recommended 30 minutes of Literacy Learning at home, I would suggest having your child use RAZ Kids at least 3 times a week for 20 minutes or so to read books in the Levelled Book Room. These books include a comprehension quiz which is a valuable tool for them. Students need to practice their comprehension skills in addition to practicing their reading strategies and by reading the books and completing the quizzes on a regular basis, it allows me to better monitor their growth remotely as a reader.
When possible, please sit with your child for a few minutes and listen to them read one or two of the books they are working on in RAZ Kids to ensure they are making every effort to read ALL words correctly. This is essential to good reading practice and there are times when even I catch them flying through a text without any regard to the actual words so they occasionally need to be held accountable!

Reading for Leisure
This would refer to the recommended 30 minutes of daily reading. This is when your child may choose to read alone a book of their choice (or books on EPIC!) that they want to read for fun (including reading the pictures of a text that is beyond their independent level) or when you read to them at bedtime. It can also include time reading to younger siblings or stuffies or when an older sibling reads to them. It might even involve reading a letter or email from a friend or reading a recipe to make cookies or help prepare a meal. It can be scattered throughout the day. For example, we take breaks often during the day to read books to the babies and Sophie is learning to read to them herself.
