Letter Writing
Given that we are separated from friends and family during this time, another authentic writing opportunity would be to write letters or make cards (ii.e., Happy Birthday, Thinking of You, etc.) for specific people and send them in mail. This is a real life skill and now is a great time to learn how to do this from writing the letter or card to addressing the envelope and taking it to the mail box.
I myself am working on letters to send to the students so they can have an opportunity to write one back to me. I would love to hear about what they have been doing and how your family is finding ways to pass the time together at home.

I have received some letters and am replying to every one so keep them coming! I love getting mail other than bills!
Samples of Student Letters
Great example of 5 Star Writing Blake! You used good finger spacing, remembered your punctuation, and did a great job spelling our Word Wall Words. You even made great attempts at new words like trampoline! I can tell that you put a lot of effort into this and used your best printing! Way to go!
Isaiah, what really stands out here are your ideas (or content)! You had so much to say and that's what makes your writing so interesting. You also paid close attention to the 5 Stars with your finger spacing and capitals, punctuation and spelling while making sure your sentences made sense and using your best printing! Great job!
Jagger, you too had lots of news to share and your content is great. I loved that you used 3 exclamation points to show me how excited and proud you are about being able to ride your bike! That shows what we call Voice (i.e., expression or when the audience can hear your feelings or even your own voice in your writing). You also have demonstrated all of the 5 Stars (i.e., spacing, capitals, punctuation, spelling, making sense and your best printing!). Fantastic job!

Another great example of 5 Star Writing Sawyer! Your finger spaces and punctuation are great, and you also did a great job spelling our Word Wall Words correctly. I could easily make out the new words you tried to spell by sounding them out. You did a wonderful job with your printing as well! Well done!
Grant you have also paid close attention to the 5 Stars with your finger spaces and capitals. Every sentence makes sense with end punctuation and your spelling is great! I can also see that you took your time and did your best printing. You also had a lot to share and I love it! Thank you for sending me such a great letter!
Sara, you have also shown another great example of 5 Star Writing. You use good finger spacing and capitals at the beginning of each sentence as well as punctuation at the end. Your sentences are clear and make sense, you have spelled Word Wall Words correctly and you have used your best printing. I also love that you had lots to tell me and my most favourite part is that you remembered to use commas when you were listing some of the things you have been doing at home in one of your sentences! I'm very impressed that you remembered! Well done!
